Want to learn how to confidently and effectively use art therapeutically in play therapy with your child and adolescent clients?

Want to learn how to confidently and effectively use art therapeutically in play therapy with your child and adolescent clients?

Art is a powerful therapeutic tool for clients to explore what’s underlying their mental health difficulties and engage in deep healing.

Play therapists often integrate art interventions with their clients by accessing the therapeutic powers of play. To do this effectively and ethically, you need to understand how to facilitate, process, and therapeutically hold the art making process.

  • How do you recognize clinically relevant themes in your client’s art?
  •   What do you look for to understand what is happening in your client’s art
  •  What do you say to your client to help them process their art?  How do you make sure you don’t do or say the wrong thing?
  • How do you process your client’s art work with them to help them benefit from the activities?
  • These are critical questions to consider when integrating art into the play therapy process.

What others are saying about Cathi's trainings:

"My biggest take away is to do the play and expressive arts directives together and hearing how they might be used in session including examples of curious questions.
I also really like looking at directives and identifying how they access the therapeutic power of play."

Melissa L.

How to use art

To access the therapeutic powers of play and engage your clients in deep healing.

How to recognize clinically relevant information

So you understand what's going on with your clients. This is  essential to guide your decision making process about what's going on with your clients and how you can use art to help them heal.

To recognize the importance of using art mediums

That reflect the diversity of your clients as well as remaining culturally-sensitive to your clients.

Lots and lots of art-based interventions

To address various mental health challenges using therapeutic powers of play.

Using art in play therapy requires a framework to guide the application of your art interventions

This online training uses a neuroscience and attachment lens within a developmental framework.

Neuroscience provides play therapists with an understanding of mind-body connection and the benefit of using art to facilitate healing.

Neuroscience and attachment provide a foundation for creating a safe space to facilitate healing using art.

Using a developmental framework allows you to understand your client’s challenges within normative child development.

Understanding the stages of art development allows you to better recognize clinical themes in the play therapy process using art.

For mental health professionals pursuing a Registered Play Therapy (RPT) credential, this training fits into Category 3: Play Therapy Skills and Methods.

Here’s the rationale for Category 3: the seminal and historically significant theories underlying this training is Child Centered Play Therapy/Humanistic because the use of the therapeutic relationship is critical for the change process using with an attachment and neurobiological “lens”. Ecosystemic/Prescriptive play therapy models provide a framework for integration of theories to individualize the interventions used to meet the needs of individual clients. This training uses these seminal and historically significant theories as the foundation for the inclusion of neuroscience to inform the treatment process and use interventions based on the needs of each client/family within a safe, strong therapeutic.

Play therapy credit cannot be awarded to non-mental health professionals
